I'm replacing my gas tank straps... one is broken (rust), the other is not far off the same fate.
I have removed the plastic splash shield/strip from the front tank mount area.
I've never done this b4, so I'm looking for any words of wisdom, but also for the following specific questions:
1) There is a brake line under the splash shield strip - it runs through two standard plastic clip mounts, but also runs very close to where the outside strap mounts at the front. I suspect the brake line is NOT attached to the mounting bracket(s) by a tab, but there is enough undercoating in this area that I'm not 100% sure. Comments ?
2) It looks like the front covering bracket that the straps pass through has to be completely unbolted to re/re the tank straps - T/F ?
or 2a) Can you safely lift the tank much or at all ? I'm wondering if you can just loosen the front bracket, and lift the tank enough to sneak the two straps loose at the front ? (Car is not running (long story), and tank is at least 3/4 full).
3) I have the tank supported down the centre with 2 pieces of 2x6, on 2 separate jacks. These cover at least 3/4 of the length of the tank, leaving the front mounting bracket exposed for removal. Short of building a temporary full perimeter support frame, have I missed anything obvious ?
I don't like lifting tanks, and dislike even more disturbing brake lines, so any inputs would be well appreciated.
Not for the first time..... I was thinking tonight how much I envy folks in Arizona..... 30 year old cars with no (by my standards) rust... must be nice (although I know you buy more batteries in AZ than most.... everything has a price..)
Best Rgds, D.
