Won't stay in overdrive; Mechanic's diagnosis reasonable?

My '94 940 (153K miles) will not stay in O/D. Previously the switch on the gearshift worked fine and I used overdrive all the time. A month ago I noticed that sometimes the "up arrow" light was on, sometimes it was off. The switch on the gear shift lever did not work.

Took it to my mechanic yesterday. He says nothing is wrong with the "kick-down" something; no shorts in the system. I think he says the switch is bad but can't be replaced by itself - the entire gear shift lever has to be replaced. He's tracked down a used one but does not have a price yet.

My questions:
1. is there any way to replace the switch by itself?
2. does the diagnosis sound correct?
3. does the repair sound like the right approach?
4. should i go with the used part to save money or pay the expense for a new one?

Thanks for any help.
