I've got the opportunity now to buy an 89 and 84 244 donors for $100. I've been picking parts off them for a couple years but the mechanic is moving shop and needs them gone in the next month. I've got a nice list of things to get off the cars including a new water pump and alternator. But what I'm not sure about is how can I get the floor pans off the under side of one of the cars to be put on my rusty 86 244? I'm thinking grinder to cut the metal or is there another way. Where do I cut and is it really going to be worth it.
PS. Above is my question, below is the scenario.
The thing is this past weekend I bent my engine crossmember when my front passenger tire went off a mountain dirt road or the road gave way sending my crossmember into a rock that stopped me from going any further down a 20 foot decent. I was able to back up luckily. Not a nice sound, screwed up the steering by putting the rack out of alignment. But stopped just short of messing with the rack.
I can get a crossmember off the 89. But at this point my 86 is in need of some serious underbody work if I'm going to continue to drive it for an extended period. Including an elongated hole in the rocker panel below the drivers door where the water should drain out. I'm tempted to part it out as well and start waiting for the right late 245 to come along. But I can't let myself go and let a drivable 240 go the way of the bone yard when its just the crossmember at the moment. One more winter in it to allow my 1983 245 to remain rust free would be worth the task of swapping the crossmember, oh and the belly pan since I pushed up the very bottom of it last year so the drain plug sits up a bit now and leaks a bit. But I'm wondering if its really worth it if I have floor pans that need $$ poured into a welder. Plus the grinder idea sounds like a hard route. Hate to see the car go over such a stupid little accident. The roof has clear coat gone and a rear fender has filler cracks getting worse as of a couple years ago. Mold has infested my rear passenger side carpet from the rusted out floor and stinks when it rains or snows. But the car looks pretty good and shiny when cleaned.
PSS. My brother has the 1982 MPG 244 that he's planning to part out here really soon. The car was hit from behind and after getting the insurance money he kept driving it on a salvaged title but now it just isn't being driven. I think the engine is one of the more rare types, not the typical intake. If anyone has need of parts from this engine let me know. I'm thinking K-jet but I'm not familiar with K-jet.
