A/C, it isn't the low pressure switch 700 1991

Posted previously about intermittant cooling problems with the A/C. Sometimes the compressor runs for long time, 2.5 hours, sometimes not even a block. Sometimes comes back on by it self in a short time, medium time, long time, sometimes never until shutdown and parked for a while. It is not predictable based on outside temp, throttle usage, etc.

Have checked the low pressure switch on the accumulator today. Came home with the car at a time when the compressor was not running. Parked and left car running, opened hood. Pulled the connector on the low pressure switch and shorted it with a paper clip, per the FAQ. There was a response from the engine computer, and the idle notably changed, depending on whether or not the switch was plugged in or not, and shorted or not, but it did not start up the A/C compressor.

Is there a high pressure sensor switch on this car? Could that be the problem? Either there is really too much pressure and it is shutting off as it should, or the high pressure switch, if there is one, is failing? Or is it now more likely the control unit? Could it be a refrigerant problem, even though there seems to be enough of it in there?
