Case of the slowly fading brake pedal 200 1990

Happy labor day to all! I have much laboring to do, but the brakes on my '90 245 just jumped to the top of the list.

I noticed this week that while at a stoplight with my foot on the brake pedal, after about 15 seconds it started sinking to the floof slowly, until the brake failure light came on. I didnt notice this until the light came on, and I immediately realized how far the pedal had gone, let off and re-applied the brakes. The pedal stiffened right back up and the light went off.

I have had this happen a few times since, where the pedal would fade down far enough to trip the BF light, and each time the pedal would stiffen back up and the light would go off with the reapplication of the pedal. I should mention this is a non-abs car.

A check of the system revealed no visible leaks, but the front half of the fluid reservoir was down about 1/2 inch. I'm thinking master cylinder or brake booster? Or am I jumping to conclusions? Any tests or advice are greatly appreciated. I've got a power bleeder, good tools and ain't afeared to gettin dirty. Thanks in advance!

John
