Rear Axle Noise 900 1997

I have a 1997 960 sedan with the multi-link rear suspension. I've noticed a clunking noise only when I make a left hand turn. Once the car is straight no sound or problem is evident no matter how hard I accelerate. I've checked the drive shaft and replaced center support bearing. (no change in problem) I'm pretty confident the problem is the axle/differential. During a visual inspection I've noticed there is a lot more play when I push the right axle shaft back and forth or in/out of the differential. Suspension appears to be fine. Before I start tearing into this I wondered if anyone has experienced something similar?
