question about adding aftermarket stereo 900

Hi everyone,
Thanks to the amazing post on here about installing an aftermarket stereo in a 940 I'm confident about doing the job. (view the post: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1270312/940/960/980/V90/S90/tutorial_installing_stereo_volvo_940_wiring_guides_included.html )
Mine has a bad connection in the volume nob that causes the left speaker to come in and out, as it pleases. Plus the tap mechanism is louder than the music that I play. Given the plethora of inexpensive aftermarket options with aux input jacks for my ipod, I think I'm going to add one of these.

However, I have a question that wasn't addressed in the post, and hopefully somebody who knows anything at all about car stereos can answer it, or at least tell me if I'm asking a stupid question. As I understand it the 940 has a somewhat unique set-up involving an amp that is under the dashboard. The post on here makes detailed reference to modifying the speaker wires going into this amp. But what if the stereo that I buy already comes with a dedicated "pre-amp" output to be used with a separate amplifier? WIth this kind of stereo, would I simply be able to run a wire from the pre-amp out over to the existing volvo amplifier, and avoid all of the wire-splicing? Murphy's law tells me that this is probably too easy to be true...

thanks
