Help please -- This will probably the first in a series of B16 questions. I'm an old B18 Volvo car nut now trying to conceptually go back in time to tango with a B16 for the first time.
I just bought old volvo boat (#2), this one equipped with an extremely original marine version B16 engine. The motor appears well cared for and supposedly ran well before being trailered and locked in a garage for the last 10 years. Intact wiring, 99% original and unmodified (fuel hose converted to metal pipe is only change)...there are even intact original decals on the valve cover and air filter! This all suggests low run time, but....
I cleaned out the fuel system, chased down a loose dashboard connection and tried to fire her up, but as the starter/solenoid spun, it began spewing huge welding-sized sparks right onto the fuel tank...the whole thing could have gone up in flames! I've never seen these fireworks happen with the B18/20 starter...what is going on and how do I fix this?
It's already apparent that the oil filter canister has to come off to get at the starter, but I'm not even sure how to pull it off. The manuals I have are all for the later engines. Anyone have a B16 manual pdf to share?
