No Priming Sound from Fuel Pump 200

Does the fuel pump always make a priming sound when the key is turned?

I have an 87 240 that starts right up every time and runs fine, but when I first turn the key to pos II, I do NOT hear the trademark priming sound of the fuel pump. Is this a symptom of a problem that may leave me stranded?
