I’m experiencing intermittent stalling while driving in my ’90 240 wagon w/ manual trans. It’s been happening for a few months – mostly while my sister is driving the car. She had to put hers down and I let her borrow my car when she has to drive to work which is about 45 miles away.
While stopped at a stop light and sometimes while driving along the car will stall. I will have to take out the key, put the car in neutral, sit for about 10-15 seconds (this is a really long time when people are backing up behind with scowls on their faces) and then put the key back in and start up and go.
I cleaned off the positive battery terminal and this made it go away for a few weeks but now it’s back. It’s even been doing an ‘almost stall’ every now and then where it seems to lose power and the dash lights come on for a split second and then it’s fine. I just had the battery checked and they say it’s still good. My next suspect is the alternator.
Does anyone know if there is a way to diagnose if the alternator is the culprit. Does anyone have any other thoughts on what it might be?

The check engine light comes on after the stall but the OBD just gives 1-1-1. Also having a tough time shifting to second after driving for a while (need a new clutch soon).
i replaced the thermostat, spark plugs and wires and had a new timing belt installed a month or so before this started happening.
