toxic smoke coming out of vents 200 1989

Hello,
I have a 1989 240 wagon and every once and awhile a short lasting puff of smoke comes out of the heater vents, only when using the heater, never the a/c. The smoke smells like a burnt, toxic smell. The Heater and defrost still work but I am concerned about this periodic puff of smoke. There is no fluid in the carpet near the floor board indicating heater core problem. Is this still a heater core or wiring problem? I don't know where to start. Thank you.
