I'm getting desperate! My 1991 240 (244K) starts and idles fine. It loses all power though when you try to accelerate. When you press down on the pedal, it slows down instead of accelerating. If you continue to hold the pedal down, it will eventually die. If you back off, it will eventually catch its breath and allow you to cruise along at about 25mph.
I have replaced the AMM, looked for vacuum leaks, checked the timing, and disconnected the O2 sensor. Nothing has made any difference. I don't think it's the cat because the car stays at normal temperature and there is pressure at the tailpipe.
Anyone ever heard of this? Any ideas?
