Install alternator 200 1993

I am installing an alternator. I had to unhook alt. to get belts off. Oil sending unit seems to be in way to adjust alt. so alt. will fully go up against block. Is this normal? This is the dangest job I've took on in a while. I had a heck of a time getting AC loose enough to get belt off. Any suggestions on that before I go out in the rain to complete job? Thanks.
