rwd-volvo 740 electrical question

mods please feel free to place this in the appropriate thread if necessary as i do not know how to post new messages in a thread.

i am having an intermittent problem with my 1986 740,
at times the oil pressure light will illuminate and along with it the temp. gauge will go twords the cold side. before it happens rpm tach fluctuates. it seems to go away after i rev the engine to above 3k for a few seconds and dosent immediately return. is this a voltage regulator issue? or is there an intermittant short somewhere? engine performance when driving and lights are not affected. replacement cluster is 100 percent good(vdo) vehicle has near 300,000 miles any suggestions? alt. was replaced with used 100 amp unit. and is the bosch n-1. BRAND NEW BOSCH brushes installed nov. 2008 on old regulator.

im thinking its a VR issue and should proceed with the external VR mod but i want to be sure this is the problem. engine sounds like it wants to stall(bogs) but never so much as thinks of doing so. harness was checked and repaired in march or april 2008. unless he was lazy which i think he was it should still be fairly decent.

let me know where i should go with this thanks,
geoff
