getting tension on ac belt 200

I recently did a timing water pump change and am putting things back together but having a tough time getting tension on the crank pulley to ac compressor belt. The split pulley is a bear to tighten and get enough tension on the belt. why oh why they didn't make it possible to adjust the tension by moving the a/c is puzzling. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks
