Automagic shifter interchange, shift lock vs. no shift lock 200 1986

The shifter of my 244 has been pulled apart one too many times, causing the spring loaded button in the top to pop off at random increasing intervals. To remedy this I’m entertaining the idea of swapping the whole assembly with the one from a ’92 (with the “shift lock” feature). The idea is to swap in a whole virgin unit, avoiding taking anything apart while at the same time restoring the 4th gear lockout function (right now the solenoid is bypassed and wiring disconnected). Also, the '92 shifter is a little better looking.

The one thing I am unsure of is the shift lock mechanism on the later model shifter. How does it function can it be disabled without too much destruction? Or should I be enabling that function on my ‘86?

Thanks for your insights.
