Front tire wear on sides - why ? 700 1988

Hello. 1988 740GL wagon with 204,000 miles. Mix of highway and local driving. Aligned earlier this year. Problem is both front tires show wear/balding on both inside and outside sides. Center is fine. I am not underinflating. I keep them at 32 pounds which is a bit more then called for. When i tug at both of the front wheels they seem fine - no play or wobble. So what further can I check ? What could be causing this uneven tire wear ?
