Help! Loud Thump from Drivetrain 200 1988

So I have a very bad sounding thump that follows acceleration. It does it in reverse and forward. It is a loud thump and sounds like its coming from the transmission area. Ive felt like my U-joint has been bad for a while. Could it be the U-joint? the transmission?
Ive experienced it before during warm-up but it would go away. Now it won't and it's loud to the point I really can't drive it.
Automatic transmission.
