93 240 idles rough at start and hesitates when accelerating from stop 200 1993

About 2 months ago my 240 would barely start. Had to crank it several times giving it lots of gas then it would finally start and run really really rough for 45-60 seconds then run fine. I tried a new Air Mass Meter and checked the O2 sensor but neither were the problem. Finally took it to the shop and they replaced the ECT sensor. When I picked it up from them it ran fine but the next morning and every time I've started it since (a few weeks) it starts on the first crank and doesn't require me stepping on the gas pedal but it does idle rough for about 60 seconds (not nearly as bad as before replacing ECT sensor) then it seems to warm up an idles fine. During this warm up process the exhaust smells very strong with fuel. It idles better on start up if its colder outside (i.e. 30s and 40s) compared to when warmer (60s and 70s). Also, when accelerating from a stop it will hesitate briefly, almost as if its going to shut off then accelerates. Pushing slowly on the accelerator makes the hesitation seem less and a few times that I have pressed the pedal quickly to accelerate the check engine light flashed on for a brief moment then went away. I've replaced the thermostat thinking it might be stuck open and also removed and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body (it was filthy). plug wires are brand new and distributor cap, rotor and spark plugs are only about 9 months old. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?
