A/C unit not responding 200 1985

1985 turbo wagon.....a/c does nothing, no engine noise reduction, nothing from the compressor and of course no change in temp. I have checked all the fuses, is there a way to test the rheostat a/c switch to see if it is functioning or any other test I should be doing before I assume that it is a bad compressor. Any wisdom from anyone would be appreciated.
