Alternator Brush Length 200 1979

Hello.

I'm a newbie here so hello, all.

I have a '79 245 wagon and am in the process of swapping out my alternator brushes and want to be sure of the proper "fully extended" length of new brushes before I solder the braids in place. I have an aftermarket Bosch 55 amp alt. running to an external regulator.

I've already removed the old brushes and am ready to go with the new ones. I'm all set with my rosin core solder, flux, etc. I can find info on the minimum length brushes should be before requiring a change (no less than 0.5mm, right?) but no info on how far they should protrude from the housing when new. Any advice?

I'm only doing this as preventative maintenance. My exciter wire broke, causing a dead battery (that side of the dash hasn't lit up since I got the car, so no indicator!) Figured while I was in there I'd hit the brushes, too.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really want to do this right. This site is the best!
