Hello everyone,
I just joined the forum here, because I changed the front brakes on my 1997 Volvo, and today as I was breaking them in, they were screeching when I pressed the brakes. They are not making any noises when just driving, and the rotors turned freely before I mounted the tires. The screeching/grinding only comes when applying the brakes.
The brakes pads are Thermoquiet pads (ceramic, I guess), and the rotors are generic I believe--all parts were for my year Volvo, 1997, (from Advanced), though not from Volvo themselves. I followed all of the necessary procedures. All parts were thoroughly cleaned with brake cleaner; the slide pins, etc. were lubricated properly (with Permatex synthetic lubricant); and the back of the pads got a thin coat of the permatex as well (though I think, as I read more about it, that Thermaquiets don't require break grease on the backs of the pads).
I called up Advanced auto parts, and they first said that they don't take grease on the backs. They originally sold me the permatex packets though. Anyway, I don't think that this would be causing the problem. The next thing they told me is to check the wear sensor (or weat indicator), because maybe this is scraping the rotors. I didn't see any wear indicator/sensor, though, when I did the rotor/pad change. Do these year Volvos have wear sensors?
This is my first time doing a brake change, and I thought I was prepared enough. I had read a lot about it online, and watched a bunch of how to videos, before so. But perhaps I missed something.
Could it just be the new pads need to be worn in a bit?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Joseph
