79 240 - Clutch time? 200 1979

I just helped a friend get a 79 242 running today after it had been sitting for a few years. He claims the person he bought it from (for $200) said the clutch was fine. When I finally got it running and went to take it for a test spin, I would not go into gear- grind grind grind. I finally shut it off and started it in reverse. Initially it tried to move but then seemed to disengage. I was able to back it up with some complaint from the clutch (some metal on metal noise briefly). Then it wouldn't go into 1st. I restarted it in 1st and it didn't make nearly as many metal on metal noises. I took it up the block, shifting through 2nd and 3rd fairly smoothly and no bad noises that I noticed. Once I reached the stop sign, again it would not go into gear and it had burning clutch smell. I restarted in 1st and shifting again was mostly painless on the way back.

My question, is this a simple -it's time for a new clutch- or could any of this be because of how long it has been parked/unused or just bad adjustment?
