Girling vs. ATE Calipers – What is the real difference? 200 1990

240dl sedan

I’m redoing front calipers, rotors and brakes. On this and other forums, I’ve found that the front calipers should be either Girling or ATE, and the rear calipers ATE. The existing front calipers are 4 piston calipers. There are various numbers stamped on the interior and exterior of the calipers, but no “G” for Girling.

I realize that most if not all calipers these days are re-manufactured. But what is the real difference between Girling and ATE calipers? And do I care which I end up with?

Right now, I have ordered ReTech calipers from FCP Groton because supposedly they are Girling. But, while FCP says they are Girling, they also note there is nothing stamped on the caliper or on the box that states that. So are they?

I called ReTech, and the product manager does not know whether they are Girling.

So repeating the questions - What is the real difference between Girling and ATE calipers? And do I care which I end up with?

The rotors will be Brembo vented, and the pads Volvo.

Thanks
