The other day I was driving my 89/98 240DL when it died. When the car died I didn't hear any pings or anything crazy like that. I had it towed to my mechanic and he said the timing belt gave out. He said I would need to have all the valves replaced along with the head gasket, etc. for $1500. Granted he does not work on many Volvo's, but he has always been honest and good for all my other cars.
I read somewhere online that the BF230 engines were not 'interference' engines, and that when the belt breaks the valves and the pistons don't occupy any overlapping space like the 5 cylinders do. Hence, no contact damage.
Does anyone know if this true, or is the engine toast?
