As i am too cheap to buy a car for more than a few thousand dollars i have enjoyed quite a few dependable and enjoyable volvo wagons ( + i sedan) in the nearly 30 years that i have been driving them.
After i blew the transmission in my well used 1991 740 wagon i was forced to re-vehicle over thanksgiving weekend. I purchased a 1996 960 wagon with 148,000 on it. It was $3K. I was aware of the timing belt issue (replace or DIE!) and the blinking trannylightact. But i was taken with all the LUXURY features (sunroof, temp control, tilt wheel, leather, AC, 3rd seat, front seat like alazy boy, and the heavy/safe feel of it, etc etc) the power of the straight 6 (24 valve) appealed to me as well.
Two weeks to the day, the Gear Position Sensor PNP Switch did its blinking light act. ...Faint smell of hot ATF. After restarting vehicle a number of times it went away...and isn't on today. I Did THETEST : PNP Diagnosis: Put the trans in PARK. Turn the key to #2. Step on the brake and attempt to shift out of Park. Does it happen? If so, your PNP is working. (Courtesy FCPGroton) - And it appears to be working. I ordered one anyway, (GENUINE VOLVO) because it appears to be failing and i am VERY dependent on my car so getting stranded is not an option on most days.
QUESTION: did i make an ill informed decision on this rig? Even Regrettable? Have i bought into a stream of computer failures and hidden expen$e? Would a tank-like, but older 240, or sticking with a 740,(which now appears like a toy next to this technologically advance monster of a ride) have been the better choice??
sigh.
sign me, volvo loyal but wondering...
