I am giving this car to my 19 year old son who will drive it a 1000 miles to his duty station. A great starter car he has helped work on.
I decided to R&R the factory installed voltage regulator. It was running fine but with 161,000 miles, it wouldn't be too long. Glad I did.
A few thoughts:
- with the car/frontend on a lift the voltage regulator is very accessible from underneath. No need to remove the alternator
- 1197311028 is the new Bosch number. Per FCP Groton, my old number 1197311022 was rolled to the new one.
- There was not much left of the old brushes and just a little bit of wear imbalance.
- I've had Bosch voltage regulator brushes last a short as 50,000 miles (due to a flaw in the alternator not the brushes) and as long as 200,000 miles.
Great forum!
