Transmission blues 200 1985

I have been working for the last 6 months getting my 85 turbo wagon up to speed and drove it for the first time this week since I bought it a year ago. I am going to have to replace the automatic tranny, it has electric od. I have read that there are problems with the elect. od transmissions. It has a very loud constant whine and really makes some clunks and strange noises as it shifts. No apparent slippage but I really have just driven it in the neighborhood since it is not yet tagged. I have no idea as to the history of transmission other than it is original to the car. I am thinking of getting a re-manufactured replacement. I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to:
1. A reputable company in the Richmond, Va. area
2. getting a od transmission that does not have the electric overdrive
3. any other info they could share

My current volvo guru guy is big in to recycled parts, which is ok butI don't think so for a transmission. I am planning on keeping this car and tagging it in January with antique plates so I am not looking to short cut this in any way.
