Hi
1995 960 Wagon
I have the following intermittent problem with my FRONT wipers and hope somebody can point me in the right direction.
1) Intermittent position (1 click down on the stalk) doesn't work at all-ever.
2) On position (2 clicks down) works sometimes, then wipers can and do stop
3) Fast on position (3 clicks down) doesn't work at all
4) Front Washers work (pulling the wiper stalk towards me)
5) Rear wiper works fine as does the rear washer
6) When they do work in the "on" position, they do not park themselves back down when I switch the wiper stalk off and just stay wherever they were on the windscreen when I turned the switch on.
When they stop working, I can get them to sweep by moving the wiper stalk to the "on" position and then pulling the wiper stalk (it is spring loaded) slightly towards me (as if I'm using te washer but not quite all the way). This makes them work but only while I am pulling/holding the switch towards me against the spring pressure. The minute I release the wiper stalk back to the original position, they stop working.
But on other days, they may work fine.
Today I drove roughly 60 miles to Oxford. Wipers worked in the on position for about the first 30 miles, then stopped completely in a rain storm. Even holding them towards me like I normally do didn't make them work. Then after about 10 minutes, holding them worked again.
The car has not been used for about a year till last week.
I checked the fuse and cleaned it up bright and it made no difference.
My diagnosis is that its the wiper stalk internal swich which is worn but before spending £60 (GBPs) at the Volvo dealer for the part, I wanted your opinion. Could it be the wiper motor or the relay? Where is the relay? Anything else I should check?
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Peter
