Gear Bits/Shards in Manual Transmission 200 1986

I've got an '86 240 DL Wagon with manual transmission. A few days back, there was this loud thump when I tried to drive off from an intersection and I couldn't get it into 1st gear; so I drove off in 2nd to this crunchy sound - 3rd and 4th were fine.

Got home and not a day later, when I tried to drive, it made a thump thump sound with each foot forward and suddenly, I couldn't get it into gear at all. Also, with it in neutral and the clutch out, there was this loud spinning sound.

So I took it to the mechanic; No visible signs so they opened the transmission to find all these shards and bits of the gears. And also, whatever the rod is that goes through the transmission, was kind of stripped at one end and so it wasn't catching (whatever it needs to catch).

What caused this? Normal wear and tear? They tell me they can fix it with parts - true? They said the case is in great shape. The gears looked shiny and were lubricated well.
