Clutch Release Bearing - Lubricate?? 900 1995

Hello,

I’m looking for a bit of advice on a noise which has recently become noticeable on tick-over when starting up from cold on a cold (UK) morning and then becomes more obvious when the clutch pedal is depressed fully.

The noise is not low pitched but more of a squeal than a whine, it isn’t very loud and peters out after a few minutes as the engine warms up.

The car has done 154,000 miles on its original clutch (which still works fine) and I suspect the problem lies with a drying out clutch release bearing.

I don’t really want to replace the clutch (and release bearing) at the moment. But I would like to know if anyone can help me with the diagnosis and if it all points to the release bearing, can it be left for the time being or lubricated sufficiently by gaining access through the aperture in the bell housing for the clutch lever assembly and squirting some oil/grease into the bearing?

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Jon
