Application of anti-squeal grease on brake pads 200 1986

I'm replacing my front rotors and front and rear pads tomorrow. The pads are Volvo pads from eEuroparts.com and came with shims. When applying the brake grease to the back of the pads, do I just lay the shim on the back of the pad then apply the grease or apply grease, lay the shim then apply another coat of grease?
