Nephew bought an '89 245 that I'm trying to get road worthy.

Replacing the down pipe from the manifold to cat (because of holes where hanger bracket was welded). Looked in at cat and 02 sensor and it's pretty black. Am thinking of trying to clean cat to improve emissions. Can it be done with brake cleaner, carb cleaner, water or something before I re-install it?
