Oil Separator: two openings, 1 seal? 200 1989

Not sure how this Separator actually works. I thought it was a simple catch for oil that wants to come up out of the Crankcase.

Why is there two separate holes in this separator that fits down into the Block?

Why is there only one 'O' Ring Gasket when there are two different sized shapes on the Separator? wouldn't they both need gasketing?
It's getting juicy down there so it's time to replace the 'O' ring.
