i am having a persistent problem with the braking system on my 1990 740 wagon (in relation to this post: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1394987/740_still_shuddering_braking.html) to me it feels as if the rotors are slightly warped or something is causing the pads to grab each rotation under braking - it would appear to be directly related to the physical components of the braking system as this grabbing sensation slows with vehicle speed - here's a list of what i've investigated so far with minimal success:
1. inspected front pads and rotors - rotors were near the end of their life with the front passenger side appearing to have a slight high spot - rotors and pads replaced with OEM quality components - bottom caliper locating pins were ceased on both sides, these were freed up, lubricated and reinstalled - ABS pickup wheel and sensor was inspected and cleaned of rust and flaking buildup --> this fix resulted in a slight improvement but grabbing was still noticeable
2. removed the 10A fuse for the ABS system which is located under the dash on the drivers side - anti-lock idiot light is now on indicating ABS is not functioning - my chiltons manual indicates that this will effectively bypass the ABS system --> this resulted in a great improvement all but eliminating the problem, but it turned out to be only temporary and the grabbing is just as bad now as before 1st fix about 2 months later
rear brake assembly has been inspected and appears to be operating normally
the car is still driveable and stopping distance doesn't seem to be effected, but i'd really like to clear this up before the warm weather arrives as i plan to be pulling a tent trailer this summer - any ideas???
