Anyone here seen an intermediate shaft gear disintegrate? 200

I picked up a '93 244 with a B230f N/A for my daughter before Christmas and I finally got around to taking it apart. When I went to pick it up I actually was able to drive it onto my trailer but the engine sounded like a midget was inside beating on it with a sledge hammer. This is why it was only $300. Anyway, I have an '88 B230f I was going to build up and put in it for her but I don't think I'll need it. Today, as I was working on disconnecting everything to get ready to pull the engine and transmission, I noticed that the timing belt cover had several fresh cracks in it. I wondered what would cause this and my curiousity got the best of me and I removed the timing belt cover to find that the intermediate shaft gear was broken into 4 pieces. I'd already removed the crank pulley and of course the timing belt fell off so I took a breaker bar and a socket and turned the crankshaft all the way through and it felt smooth like it should. I also did the same to the intermediate shaft anf it was smooth as well. Has anyone heard of this before? Needless to say, I'm looking for a round-toothed intermediate shaft gear. Let me know what you all think.
