'88 740 GLE -- any computer codes need to be reset when changing ECM? 700 1988

I have been told the ECM, a Bosch model 0261201011, is shot and needs to be replaced. The car, an '88 740 GLE, started with weird racing and high rpms, then stalling out, and then not starting, but sometimes starting after a jump, and sometimes just cranking. anyway, a specialist shop said it was the ECM, which retails for about $1,300 new. Won't put in a used one, cause they don't want to vouch for any kind of warranty or be held responsible in any way.

A regular garage will put in a used one i found on E-bay, but the guy says he doesn't know if it will work if computer codes need to be reset.

Any info, advice? the dealer also wanted to replace the wiring harness at a cost of another $1,200 -$1,300 bucks because he said deterioration in the harness might have contributed to the failure in the ECM.

any hope of saving my ol' reliable with 240,000 miles on it for less than the $2,500 from a dealer?

thanks much
