Steel timing gear swap, the final chapter – for now 120-130

The last chapter in the continuing saga, at least for now. See my earlier posts for the story to this point. I dressed the keyway in the steel cam gear so that there were no burrs, remeasured the keyway and compared it to the key itself and satisfied myself that it should be possible to tighten the cam nut so that the gear would be snug up against the spacer ring. Twas not to be however, and the knock remained.

Realizing that I was running out of time before the start of the summer cruising season up here in the Great White North and having other jobs ahead of me before Veronica is ready to go, I reinstalled the original fibre gear set. As I expected the engine ran beautifully, with no knock. I did notice as I installed the fibre cam gear that it slid into place with less effort than that required of the steel gear, so I’m certain that’s where the problem lies. A job for next winter.

Thanks for everyone’s help on this project. I’ve certainly learned a lot about the removal and installation of timing gears, especially in an auto-trans car.
