Possible cause of snapped timing belt 200 1989

I'm helping a friend fix his car. It's now dead in a garage with a snapped timingbelt. What happened was that it was stuck in overdrive and he was driving with this fully loaded wagon for about 120 miles when he heard a pop and the car died also some oil leaked out. Now when I look at the car the timing belt is snapped, the upper flametrap hose is loose plus the small filter's missing and there's oil all over the engineblock and cover. Where do we start? I don't really just wanna put on a new belt without figure out why it broke in the first place, it seemed to be in an allright shape. Any help appreciated,

Thanks
