85 OD/Solenoid/4th gear 200 1985

I was told that potentially part of my OD issue could be the 4th gear switch, and one way to check it out was to remove glove box and remove the OD relay and with the ignition off, check for continuity between red wire at socket and any metal ground point while in 4th gear.

I've done that, and I had continuity.

Then I also was told to check for voltage with ignition on.

I did that too, and I was pulling around 7-8.

Next I was told that if there was continuity in 4th gear and none when in other gears, and no voltage present with ignition on, switch is OK and correctly wired.

But, I had continuity in all gears.

My question is, I remembered that I had disconnected the solenoid from the wires (when I took the replacement out and put in the one I had "fixed"). So would having no wires connecting to the solenoid maybe cause a faulty reading here?

I know it could ground somewhere, and later today I will be re-checking it. I just wanted to find out if this seems like a logical reason for why the continuity was screwy, and I was getting a reading with the ignition on.
