when the car is cranked three bulbs in the instrument panel provides excitation current for the alternator. does anyone know how much current is really needed?

the reason i'm asking is i'm sick of going through those 2721 bulbs like peanuts and want to switch to LED (with built in resistors). but these LEDs only pass 12mA each.
