240 stalling for no apparent reason 200 1988

Got a problem with my '88 Volvo wagon stalling gratuitously. I'll be driving along at all speeds or even from a dead stop and it acts like it is starved for fuel, then it will die. I have taken to putting it in neutral after coming to a stop and easing on the throttle as I accelerate. It usually will restart after two or three times, but not always. One time recently, I had to use a boost after the battery lacked the juice to do turn it over after too many failed attempts.

I have replaced the manifold gasket(it was leaking on #2 cylinder), the rotor, distributor, the brain (used), and the fuel filter. My mechanic suggested looking at the fuel pump relay. If it fails to start he suggested that I remove it, tap it on its side, and reconnect it. This has had mixed results. Before I buy a new one , I would like to see if that is what it really needs. Anybody got any thoughts on this?
