Motor oil in the coolant reservoir? 200

'87 240 DL Wagon
Original motor, transmission, odometer broke at 240,000 miles ten years ago.
Radiator (and coolant reservoir cap) replaced two months ago rather than repair a crack in the radiator upper plastic shell.

Noticed a brownish smudge trail as a result of fluid emerging from the reservoir top/cap and dribbling down the side of the reservoir. Removal of the cap and inspection of the coolant reservoir revealed a brownish liquid in place of the formerly clear Prestone coolant. First thing I thought of was motor oil got into the coolant somehow.

Checked the motor oil dipstick, there was no 'mocha milkshake' consistency to the motor oil; looked like normal motor oil to me. Same story with the oil fill cap; oil looks normal.

How would motor oil get from the engine to the coolant system, but not also allow coolant in to the motor?

What might be wrong with this venerable old vehicle?
