1992 240 Wagon - Automatic Transmission Problem 200 1992

In the past few weeks the shifting in my 1992 240 wagon with automatic transmission and 196K on it has become more and more arduous. Shifting into 2nd is fine, but shifting into third and subsequent gears often takes 15-20 seconds of high RPM. Further the transmission seems to "kick" violently when downshifting.

After leaving a store this after noon I couldn't get it to shift into third and ended up driving home on the expressway like a snail (I checked the shift-lock fuse upon returning home and it was fine.).

Any ideas what is going on here, what I should take a look at first?
