odd temp gaujge fluctuations. 700 1990

My brick has 225,000 on the odometer so this may be to be expected, but recently while driving or just idlying the temperature gauge flickers between middle to low and sometimes stays at different levels. It never goes into the hot zone and at times will register normal [center] coolant level is fine, thermostat was changed last year, any clues?
