A 'belt' or 'bushing' sound when engine running? 200 1993

I have a '93 245 w/ 214k miles. For a long time now, I've noticed that there's a sound like a wearing belt or bushing when the car is idling. When I accelerate, the sound goes away. It's not a fan belt... I suspect it may be the alternator?? Any helpful hints on what to replace or fix? I'll try and raise the hood this afternoon to see if I can pinpoint the component makin the sound. I want the car to be quiet at the stop lights like everyone else.
