replacing pickup sensor in 740 distributor 700

The engine on my son's 87 740 has begun to suddenly die, and then not restart for variable periods of time. diagnosis revealed no spark, and probable faulty hall sensor. Two questions -
1. is the hall sensor the same thing as the pickup inside the distributor ?
2. Can I use epoxy or jbweld to reliably hold the new pickup in place ?
