Alarm - fob won't turn it on 900 1995

Hi
Previously, when I locked/unlocked the car with the remote fob, it would also switch the alarm on/off so I could see the red light on the dashboard speaker blinking. I also heard a bleep/beep from the alarm horn in the engine bay confirming it was on/off.

But recently, the fob only activates the central locking but does not switch the alarm on or off. (I don't see the red blinking light in the speaker nor do I hear the bleep/beep from the alarm horn.)

Does anyone have any ideas what has caused this? I have been messing with the batteries in the fob because its not been working every time. Could that be a cause? What should I do?
