Judder/Lurching engine when I lift off the accelerator 700 1989

Hello,

I'm a recent Volvo and now a total convert, but I'm having a problem with my 1989 740 GL (four speed manual with overdrive). It has one lady owner (my wife's Gran) from new and is otherwise in good nick.

Recently my wife got into start it one morning and it wouldn't catch. It turned over but there was no spark. I replaced the plugs and the air filter and it started again. Before that the exhaust mount hooks on the muffler went and so the exhaust is attached with a kind of bungy harness to the rear of the car.

The problem is that ever since I replaced the plugs it hasn't run very smoothly at all. It's okay under acceleration or at motorway cruising speed, but as soon as I lift off the accelerator I get an irregular engine judder which disappears as soon as I give it just a little more gas. I just had to do a couple of longish trips and it seems to be getting worse.

I'm wondering where to start on the troubleshooting. All suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
