Reverse backup light wiring question (85 245) 200 1985

Hello all,

I have my transmission out, and I'm replacing my clutch and transmission, and in the process, fixing my reverse and OD switches and their wiring.

My question is this:

The original reverse light switch was hard-wired, and had 3 wires. The replacement (well, the one on the donor transmission) as the 2 prongs like you see on IPD's website. (http://www.ipdusa.com/uploads/images_skus/13201.jpg).

What was the third wire for? On the original light switch, the 3 hard-wires led to a connector, and the connector had to 2 wires coming out of it, and what appears to be a broken/missing wire in the 3rd slot of the connector.

The two wires coming out of the connector were black and a two tone wire (I want to say red and brownish).

The three wires coming out of the original switch were two similar wires and the ground.
